Water cooling systems
Thermocoil® cooling trains
The last stand shapes the bar. The water decides what it becomes.
After the finishing stand, controlled water cooling decides the final microstructure.
Thermocoil® · MWE Mill Solutions GmbH

Thermocoil® was developed by SKET in the 1980s for wire rod lines at product speeds up to 100 m/s; MWE carries it forward with the APROCS control system and has also extended it to bar mills.
BEISCO manufactures Thermocoil® cooling boxes, pipes and stripper nozzles to MWE design.

How a water cooling line works
The rolling is finished. The steel is still making up its mind.
- 1Finishing standThe bar leaves with its final size, still hot.
- 2Cooling boxesWater cools the surface, box by box.
- 3Stripper nozzlesTake the water off the bar.
- 4Equalising distanceHeat from the core evens out the temperature of the bar.
Field note
Water is cheap. Getting it to the right place, for the right time, at up to 100 m/s is not.
